SECTION HEAD OF CATS and SECURITY PERSON

Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent is currently recruiting for someone to fill the dual role of Section Head of Cats / Cover Security Person.

SECTION HEAD OF CATS:
To oversee the day to day running of the Cat Section and its four employees.

Howletts has a large and varied carnivore collection that includes Sumatran and Amur tigers, Pallas cats and North Chinese leopards as well as canids such as Dhole, African hunting dogs and Iberian wolves. Howletts currently has the largest collection of Clouded leopards in captivity and holds the EEP studbook for this species.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have previous carnivore management experience and will have had a minimum of 5 years experience within a main stream animal collection. A proven track record of personnel management is also required.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full clean driving licence.

COVER SECURITY PERSON:
To act as a general security person whose core role is to ensure that all visitors leave the park at set closing times. Additional duties include:
• Securing gates after closing time.
• Responding to security calls both during work time and out of hours
• Reporting faults on CCTV systems.
• Working alongside external companies to ensure CCTV systems are properly maintained.
• Responding to general security calls involving the public.

-You must have at least 4 years zoo animal experience

-General Animal Husbandry

-Training animals and assisting the team

-Train to deliver

-Experiences/Tours/Keeper Talk – rotas for your section and assisting others

-Diets and Feeds

-Enrichment

-ARCS/Zims

-Driving Company Vehicles

-Assisting with Cat movements on and off site – Import and Export

-Get involved with the collection, breeding, EEP’s etc

-Assisting with general maintenance; general upkeep of enclosure, painting and outside of enclosures

-Assisting on vet days, carrying out medication

-Progression Training; e.g. First Aid, ZIMs, animal management etc

-6 day rota, paid monthly, statutory holiday allowance

-Full PWP animal park uniform

Department: Big Cats

Position Description: As a Keeper, you will have primary responsibility for the care and well being of animals under your attendance. Zoo Keepers must also be understanding and sensitive to the needs of the animals under their care. They are responsible for the animal exhibit’s, involved with maintenance and landscaping and presenting at daily demonstrations. Zoo Keepers are dedicated to conservation issues and animal welfare.

Zoo keepers at Australia Zoo continually work towards providing improved facilities and care for the animals. They do this with enthusiasm and motivation towards their individual learning and training.

Duties will include:


•Maintain proper cleaning procedures.

•Maintain health and safety procedures as directed by senior keepers.

•Maintain security procedures.

•Follow instructions in a safe and secure manner.

•Learn introduction process with cats.

•Establish good relationship with cats.

•Form an understanding of cat behaviour.

•Form a brief understanding of each of the cats personalities.

•Form brief understanding of leash training.

•Form a brief understanding of back-up duties on walks.

•Form good communication skills with public and media.

•Prepare diets, and gain knowledge on cat nutrition.

•Have a good understanding of exhibit or requirements for felids.

•Perform all hands on contact with big cats under direct supervision.

•Work within the guidelines of health and safety procedures to ensure both animal and personal, and visitor security.

•Participate in performance training and development reviews or programs as requested by the company both on and off the job.

•Attend meetings as requested by Management and Supervisors.

•Other duties as requested by Senior Management

Weekend availability and own transport essential.

Department: Big Cats

As a General Assistant you will be primarily responsible for general maintenance and grounds for all Big Cat enclosures, preparing and processing diets and general cleaning around the compound.

Your key responsibilities are to:

• Maintain health and safety procedures and security as directed by senior keepers
• Follow instructions from handlers in a safe and secure manner.
• Form a general understanding on Tiger information
• Prepare daily diets and enrichment which includes butchering in meat room
• Clean, maintain and develop all exhibits and enclosures
• General household cleaning
• Cleaning of tiger night dens
• Maintain the gardens and landscaping of enclosures and facilities (including mowing).
• Ability to use saws, power tools and knives.
• Participate in performance and development reviews
• Maintaining Australia Zoo’s customer service standards
• Maintaining and ensuring confidentiality and privacy
• Work within the guidelines of health and safety procedures to ensure staff and visitor safety & security.
• Participate in performance training and development reviews or programs as requested by the company both on and off the job.
• Attend meetings as requested by Management.
• Other duties as requested by Management

This position is a long term position for someone who is dedicated. The duties required are not based around the Tigers and will not include tiger handling, which means this position will be strictly ‘hands off’.
