With the new ‘Islands’ site now open, 2016 is set to be an exciting year! This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.

We currently have a vacancy for a Temporary Mammal Keeper to join our Rhino team for a period of 12 months. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety of mammal species ranging from Black and Greater one horned rhinos as well as Grevy’s zebra and a range of Bovid’s and Deer and Antelope.

Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

We are looking for someone with proven experience of working with Black or GOH rhinos and a range of ungulate species relevant to the section. They will have experience of implementing environmental enrichment and operant conditioning. Experience of working within strict Safe Working Practices is also essential for this position.


In addition to the daily care and management of the species on section, a proven track record for delivering the highest standards of exhibitry is a must and the ideal candidate will have outstanding observation skills with an excellent attention to detail.
Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages would be advantageous for this role in order to maintain accurate records. A full driving licence, valid to drive in the UK is a requirement.

Salary is £17,367 per annum for a 40 hour week on a rota basis (including some weekends and bank holidays).

We currently have a vacancy for a Keeper to join our busy and diverse section on a temporary basis for approximately 6 months. The successful candidate will assist in all aspects of animal welfare, hygiene and life support.  They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base).

They must demonstrate knowledge of the biology and husbandry of amphibians. Excellent exhibit theming skills are essential to this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare are met.

They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ZIMS is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable. 

Salary is £17,367 per annum for a 40 hour working week.

(6 month temporary contract starting October 2014)

Chester Zoo, one of Europe’s leading Zoological collections, has an active and award winning Discovery and Learning Division and is now recruiting a Zoo Ranger.

Our Zoo Ranger team are a vital part of enhancing the visitors’ experience and are involved in developing and delivering public education around the Zoo.  This will include animal talks and tours, one to one engagement, exhibition supervision, interpretation and other educational activities.  Audiences vary from 1 to 500 or more, and there is lots of public interaction requiring a confident and outgoing personality.

The successful applicant must have a Zoo Biology/Conservation degree or equivalent and have a wide ranging knowledge of natural world and animal behaviours.  
They will have good working knowledge and experience of zoo or conservation education (including researching & delivering talks to public).

They will be able to provide excellent customer service, work on their own and organise time effectively, and have experience of working as part of a team.  Good communication skills, both verbal & written are essential.  The successful candidate will be computer literate with particular working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office packages.

The successful candidate will ideally have good knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection and conservation work. They will ideally have experience of dealing with the visitors/public in a visitor attraction setting.

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Work is 10 days in 14, including Bank Holidays and every other weekend. 
Salary is £18,711 per annum for a 35 hour week.

They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ZIMS is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.  

Salary is £16,984.10 per annum for a 40 hour working week.

We currently have a vacancy for a Temporary Assistant Team Manager (maternity cover), to join our busy Aquarium section from June 2014. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside Keepers to undertake daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base) and understand how scientific method can be used to contribute to both ex situ & in situ conservation. They must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the biology and husbandry of marine & freshwater fish and of aquatic invertebrate and have a proven track record in both conservation breeding and exhibitory. Excellent exhibit theming skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare.

Candidates must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and should have some management experience as they will be assisting the team manager in all aspects of running the department. They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ZIMS is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.   

Salary is £23,487 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

We currently have 2 vacancies for a Temporary Mammal Keeper on a fixed term 18 month contract to be based on the Twilight section but who may also be trained on several other mammal sections to cover any shortcomings in staffing levels. So experience with other species is essential.
 
The post will involve the daily care and management of a variety of Mammal species including Spectacled bears, Rodrigues/ Seba’s and Livingstone bats, Anteaters and Sloth to name a few.
The successful candidate will provide excellent animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals, ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards. The role will involve promoting the conservation work at Chester Zoo through daily interaction with visitors on site.

The successful candidate will have the Zoo Animal Management, HND or degree in a Zoological related science or equivalent experience. They will have proven experience working with all of the relevant species on the section and other mammal species, proven experience of working in a zoo or safari park and of Operant Conditioning. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and proven experience of delivering the highest standards of husbandry and exhibitory along with excellent communication skills to deal with visitor questions, talks and requests for information.

The successful candidate will ideally be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages. They will desirably have proven experience with implementing environmental enrichment and experience of working within strict SWP. A full clean driving licence is also required.

Salary is £16,815.94 per annum for a 40 hour week.

Veterinary Nurse



Temporary Veterinary Nurse

We have a vacancy for a Veterinary Nurse to start mid November 2013. This is a temporary role to cover maternity leave for 11 weeks, after which it will be reviewed.

The post will involve all aspects of veterinary nursing, as part of the health care team, to benefit the health and welfare of the animal collection, including assisting in diagnostic and treatment procedures and implementing preventative medicine plans.

The successful candidate will be an experienced, qualified Veterinary Nurse, registered with the RCVS.  Proven experience working in a busy environment and proficiency monitoring anaesthetics, giving treatments and dispensing medications along with other general nursing duties is required. Experience in large animal nursing or exotic species is highly desirable. Previous experience in another zoological or wildlife collection would be preferred and proven laboratory skills, in particular experience in parasitology using McMasters and direct techniques are an advantage. Certificate in or experience of Nursing of Exotic Species, along with knowledge of Chester Zoo’s animal collection and conservation work would be desirable.

The job holder will have experience of working as part of a team and individually, have attention to detail, excellent communication skills both written and verbal, ability to manage own time effectively and be able to build strong working relationships.  The ability to be creative and think laterally would be advantageous.

The successful candidate must be competent in the use of computers and basic software packages such as Windows and Microsoft Office. They will desirably have experience with DOS computers systems such as MedARKS.

A full UK driving licence is required.

Salary is £20,913.50 per annum for a 40 hour week.
