We have an amazing opportunity for you to join our Team here at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium as a Full Time Penguin Keeper.

About the Role

As a Penguin Keeper you will assist with the care, wellbeing and general husbandry within the Curatorial team. Key duties will include assisting to ensure a high level of animal health and welfare, feeding, cleaning, record keeping and monitoring of life support systems. This position also has diving responsibilities when required.

About You

The ideal candidate for this role will have a passion for guest experience, conservation and a focus on fun. This role will be covering the Sunday to Thursday rotation, so the ability to work weekends is essential.

A Degree in Zoology or similar
Ability to maintain daily contact with a living collection of plants and animals in a varied building climate
Experience in Life Support Systems
An 'Open Water' Dive qualification
Ability to work as part of a team
Experience in Animal Husbandry
Ability to work public holidays

Ability to lift 20kg

The Oceanarium is seeking an enthusiastic and pro-active Penguin Keeper to join the team and be at the forefront of the new Penguin Beach Encounter experience.

Firmly established as one of the area’s most popular visitor attractions, the Oceanarium is home to a diverse range of creatures - from sharks and otters, to turtles and crocodiles!

The penguin keeper will provide the highest standards of care for the Oceanarium Humboldt penguin colony, in addition to the Inca terns that share the exhibit.

A key role in an exciting new facility, the keeper will be responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness and operation of the entire Penguin Beach area, offering regular talks, feeds and interactive opportunities to provide a captivating and immersive experience for visitors throughout the day.

The highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry must be followed at all times, ensuring all zoo licence regulations and BIAZA guidelines are adhered to and that related administration duties are fulfilled.

The role also includes the maintenance of the penguin quarantine area, as well as maintaining the plantroom and LSS for all the exhibits in the new facility.

The ideal candidate will have penguin keeping and presenting experience along with several years of working with a wide variety of creatures and systems. Relevant qualifications are an advantage along with an organised, structured approach and can-do outlook.

A salary of up to £18,000 is offered, along with a performance related bonus, company pension scheme and life assurance.

The position includes on-call responsibilities on a rota basis as well as weekend and bank holiday working.

Then we could have the ideal role for you. We have a vacancy within our team at Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium for a Penguin Keeper.

About the Role
As a Penguin Keeper you will be responsible for assisting with the day to day care and management of the penguin species, their exhibit and life support system.

Your duties include but are not limited to
  • Providing a suitable environment for our penguins which offers excellent welfare.
  • Meeting all husbandry requirements of the penguins including cleaning, dietary, veterinary and breeding requirements.
  • Observation and maintaining a high standard of record keeping.
  • Conducting feeding presentations and educational talks to visitors as required.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment.


About You
The ideal candidate for this role will be passionate about and have an understanding of animals and will display commitment, loyalty and a strong work ethic. Animal husbandry experience/ knowledge would be a definite advantage, in addition to physical fitness as some heavy lifting will be involved.
