EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, represents and links over 400 zoos, aquariums, national zoo federations and other organisations in 48 countries, including Members in 25 of the 27 EU Member States. It is the world’s largest regional professional zoo and aquarium body, and more than 140 million visits are made to EAZA Members each year. EAZA facilitates cooperation in our key mission areas of conservation, education and research and additionally works to advance the professional standards of our Members with regard to the care and accommodation of our animals.

 

The EAZA Executive Office consists of over 30 staff, most of whom are based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The office is responsible for the day to day running of the Association, with activities divided across two departments: Communications and Membership, Conservation and Population Management, plus an additional number of roles, including EU policy, office management and fundraising reporting directly to the Executive Director.

 

The EAZA Accreditation Programme, run by the Communications and Membership department, is the peer-review structure for ensuring that all Members of EAZA meet our rigorous Standards. Accreditation screenings are conducted on a ten-year cycle by senior zoo and aquarium figures and a rapporteur from the EAZA Executive Office. We are now seeking to employ and Accreditation Coordinator to work within the department to organise and staff accreditation screenings and work to progress the ambitious accreditation and Member services objectives outlined in the EAZA 2021-2025 Strategy.

 

Job Description

The position of EAZA Accreditation Coordinator is initially for a full-time, fixed one year contract period with the option to extend. The successful candidate will report to the Accreditation and Membership Manager and work closely with colleagues in the EAZA Executive Office and amongst the EAZA membership. This role has specific responsibility for coordination of activities related to the EAZA Accreditation Programme (EAP) for existing EAZA Members.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

·       Management of EAZA Accreditation programme to meet agreed targets;

·       Organize and administer agreed numbers of screening missions per year, including making travel bookings, creating detailed schedules, communicating with facility, screeners and other rapporteurs, and managing reimbursement requests;

·       Act as a rapporteur on site for approximately twenty screening missions per year. It is the role of a rapporteur to lead the mission, serving as the main spokesperson for the Screening Team, noting all their observations and subsequently compiling the report for the Membership and Ethics Committee;

·       Collate and organize screening documentation for delivery to the Membership and Ethics Committee;

·       Maintain an overview of accreditation of all existing Members in conjunction with other members of the Accreditation team;

·       Assist in maintaining a panel of Accreditation screeners from the membership in conjunction with other members of the Accreditation team;

·       Assist in data extraction and management for analysis and administration of the Accreditation programme;

·       Data entry and management of membership related information in the Customer Relations Management system;

·       Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of EAZA Standards and procedures

 

General

·       Contribute to various ongoing tasks in the Accreditation team and Communications and Membership department as appropriate and needed;

·       Where relevant, assist with preparation related to conferences and other general tasks in the office;

·       Contribute to ensuring the communication and publication of related information to the membership (e.g. by publication in eNews, Zooquaria, EAZA website, Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research, etc.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

The successful candidate will be educated to a minimum of degree level or equivalent. A degree in a related discipline such as zoology or biology is preferred.

 

Experience and Skills

·       Candidates must have at least five years of experience of working in the zoo and aquarium community, ideally for an EAZA Member institution;

·       Candidates with experience of experience of working with a membership based association, ideally with experience of accreditation processes will be preferred;

·       Fluent written and spoken English is essential. The ability to communicate in another European language is preferred;

·       Candidates must have good administrative and organisational skills;

·       The ability to work effectively to deadlines and under pressure is paramount;

·       Candidates that can demonstrate good prioritisation skills and the ability to balance multiple projects at the same time will be preferred;

·       Candidates must be able to work collaboratively to produce reports to given specifications;

·       Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work across multiple cultures;

·       Candidates must be able to deal sensitively and appropriately with confidential information;

·       Experience with standard Microsoft Office suite of programmes is essential

 

Important Notes

·       This role involves extensive international travel of 20 or more screenings per year plus additional travel for meetings or other activities.

·       A legal entitlement to work in the Netherlands is essential.

Employment Conditions

The position of Accreditation Coordinator is a full-time post working five days a week (38 hours), based at the EAZA Executive Office in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The successful candidate will be expected to work weekends and outside normal working hours where required, for example at conferences. There is a holiday allowance of 25 days a year and a company pension is available.

 

An initial one-year contract is offered, with a one-month probation period and potential for permanent contract to follow after positive appraisal at the end of the year. The starting salary offered is € 31,802 per year. Additionally, EAZA pays an 8% holiday allowance in May which will bring the annual salary to €34,374.

Population Biologist

EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, represents and links more than 400 zoos, aquariums, national federations and other organisations in 48 countries. In addition to furthering the professional standards of our Members with regard to the care and accommodation of the animals kept in their collections, EAZA also facilitates cooperation in our key mission areas of conservation, education and research. EAZA runs around 400 population management programmes (EEPs and ESBs) that are overseen by 42 EAZA Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs) and is in an exciting transition phase towards implementing our new population management structure.

Job Description
The position of EAZA Population Biologist is initially for a fixed one year contract period with the option to extend. The successful candidate will work for the Conservation and Population Management department and will be part of the EAZA Population Management Centre (PMC) team, reporting the PMC Manager. The EAZA Population Biologist’s main role is assisting EAZA TAGs and population management programmes with defining goals and setting Population Management targets, producing long-term management plans for EEPs and providing technical population management advice, as such contributing to achieving increasingly sustainable populations for EAZA.

Duties and Responsibilities
Population management
• Provide population management advice to TAGs, in particular in the framework of Regional Collection Plans.
• Provide population management advice to EEPs and ESBs both strategically (goal setting, master planning) and to day-to-day questions related to population management software and interpretation of data analyses.
• Prepare and facilitate Long Term Management Plan (LTMP) meetings in cooperation with EEP coordinators and EEP Species Committee and publish the LTMP reports.

• Contribute to the development of new population management tools and the integration of new science (e.g. molecular genetics) into existing EAZA Ex situ Programme structures.
• Contribute towards increased integration of EAZA’s ex situ conservation (breeding) activities with those of zoos in other regions as well as with in situ conservation (breeding) needs and priorities.
• Teach in the EAZA Ex situ Programme Management Courses.

General
• Contribute to various ongoing tasks in the Conservation and Population
Management department as appropriate and needed.
• Where relevant, assist with preparation related to conferences and other general tasks in the office;
• Contribute to ensuring the communication and publication of related information to the membership (e.g. by publication in eNews, Zooquaria, EAZA website, Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research, etc.);

Staff management
• The position aims to include line management responsibilities for the Assistant Population Biologist. This will include holding performance development reviews, overseeing the development of annual work plans as well as staff training and development.

Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
• The EAZA Population Biologist will be educated to a minimum of Master (MSc) degree level or equivalent. A degree in a related discipline such as zoology or biology is required.

Experience
• Candidates must have a minimum of two years work experience relevant to population management. Work experience including small population management and breeding programme management and/or working within the EAZA community is preferred;
• Candidates must have experience with small population management
theory and tools (SPARKS, PMx, ZIMS);
• Candidates must have a proven track record in project management and working in a multidisciplinary team environment;
• A proven ability in public speaking is essential;
• Experience with meeting facilitation will be a distinct advantage;
• Experience with standard office word processing and spreadsheet packages is essential;
• Experience with managing staff is beneficial;
Skills
• The ability to work effectively to deadlines and under pressure is
paramount;
• Excellent project management skills;

• Fluent written and spoken English is essential. The ability to communicate in another European language is preferred;
• The ability to think strategically and creatively;
• The ability to initiate new ideas and take the initiative in response to challenges and opportunities;
• The ability to explain and teach complicated technical matters in simple terms to non-specialists;
• Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work across multiple cultures.

Working Arrangements
The position of EAZA Population Biologist is a full-time post working five days a week (38 hours), based at the EAZA Executive Office in Amsterdam. From time to time it will be necessary to work at weekends and outside normal working hours.
There is a holiday allowance of 25 days a year and a company pension is available.
An initial one-year contract is offered, with a permanent contract to follow after a positive appraisal. The salary offered is €34,550 a year. Additionally, EAZA pays an 8% holiday allowance in May which will bring the salary to €37,314.

EAZA CALLITRICHID TAG EDUCATION ADVISOR

THE EAZA CALLITRICHID TAXON ADVISORY GROUP is seeking an Education Advisor.

BACKGROUND:
The TAG covers all species of marmosets and tamarins and currently supports conservation programmes in Colombia (cotton-top tamarin and white-footed tamarin) and Brazil (pied tamarin, buffy tufted-ear marmoset, golden lion tamarin, golden-headed lion tamarin and black lion tamarin). 
The TAG meets twice a year, in the spring and at the EAZA meeting in September, and works hard to fulfil its aims between meetings. We are a dynamic and friendly group and work hard to make a difference for these small monkeys.  We have a Regional Collection Plan (RCP) (2014), which will be updated after our ICAP and RCP meetings in April 2018.  We also have a Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) which are regularly updated.
The TAG’s Education Advisor is an important contributor to the development and work of the TAG. 

RECENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
•        Helping source students to assist with survey and studbook work whilst carrying out projects
•        Contributing to Regional Collection Plan and Best Practice Guidelines documents
•        Improving communication and training by the use of modern methods, e.g. using movies as an addition to the BPG
•        Improving TAG communication regarding field conservation support with a view of gaining more support from EAZA members for field conservation and also in communicating this to their zoo visitors
•        Encouraging zoos to run callitrichid days (e.g. cotton-top tamarin and golden lion tamarin) which both raise funds for projects and also engender public awareness and support in zoos

FUTURE ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES ENVISAGED:
•        To further improve communication with EAZA members in assisting them in promoting callitrichid conservation to visitors, using innovative methods, and thus increase support for programmes
•        Working with the person in the TAG’s (new) position of marketing advisor to improve awareness of callitrichid behaviour, biology and conservation
•        Encouraging callitrichid holders to implement the BPG, train staff, and carry out welfare audits on their animals
•        To encourage EAZA collections to use callitrichids in the conservation education programmes by providing them with suitable materials

THE EDUCATION ADVISOR SHOULD:
•        Be able to attend the two meetings per year and contributed to the work of the TAG between meetings
•        Have the time and resources to assist with the aims and activities of the TAG
•        Quickly respond to emails and other correspondence
•        Come up with exciting and innovative ideas
