Job Description:

  • Take full responsibility for the Animal care department, to include:
    • Ensuring the highest possible levels of husbandry is maintained, complying with all legislative requirements
    • Responsibility for the delivery and ongoing operation and maintenance of all life support systems
    • Be responsible for the opening and lock down of the aquarium
    • Ensuring all records are properly kept
    • Ensure that agreed progress to projects is made
  • Assist and guide the ongoing development plans of the site, with its continued expansion.  Providing a lead for creativity with new ideas, developments and best practice.
  • Compile training schedules and ensure completion of training for all junior staff.
  • Contribute to the development and training of our talk’s hosts, and carry out assessments where necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health & Safety standards and legislation that could affect the health & safety of staff, customers and animals.
  • Report any issues and feedback to senior management. This includes maintenance, health & safety, training or staff issues.
  • Respond to out of hours call outs, and take the lead on resolving problems.
  • Discuss and solve any problems that may arise from staff and customers in a helpful, professional manner

Person Spcecification:

  • Understand the vision, mission, objectives and culture of the company, communicate it to others with belief and passion and relate it to the work of the displays department
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of our husbandry practices and animal health
  • Work with both internal and external organisations, consultants and specialists for ongoing development
  • Ensure a full ethical stance is applied to all aspects of the site along with future development plans
  • Have excellent attention to detail
  • Hold an exemplary disciplinary record
  • Have the ability to energise, inspire and motivate others
  • Be able to implement best practice to ensure ongoing improvement of the department
  • Lead everyone in the same direction by creating and leading the culture of their teams
  • Be able to deliver research and conservational projects relevant to the site and local area

Availability:

  • You must be available to work bank holidays, weekends and all holiday periods i.e. school half terms, Easter and summer
  • Be available for alarm callouts, living within a reasonable distance of site to perform such duties
