Zoo Keeper
Amazonia
Amazonia is a small tropical
house near Motherwell in North Lanarkshire. We are seeking to employ a
dedicated zoo keeper within our team, working amongst a variety of taxa,
including small mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and fish,
working to high welfare and husbandry standards.
The ideal candidate will be
highly motivated and passionate about wildlife, with the skills required to
communicate this passion and knowledge directly to our visitors. They must
demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of modern zoo practices in animal
husbandry, diets and environmental enrichment, as well as an understanding and
knowledge of research, conservation and health and safety practices.
We are a small team and are
currently looking for a candidate with a minimum of 3 years
experience working with animals in a keeper role in a zoological garden and/or
wildlife park and hold a Diploma in Animal Management, or equivalent.
The position will
include some educational work, including delivering tours to school
groups, providing animal encounters to our visitors, occasional outreach visits
and providing animal talks at enclosures, along with interacting with our
visitors. Currently, however, due to COVID-19, we are not delivering tours
or animal experiences.
We are looking for an
individual with:
- A minimum of 3
years experience in animal keeping, including experience with
reptiles, amphibians and small mammals, along with an appropriate animal
related qualification
- Enthusiasm, high performance
and motivation, with a proven track record in a zoo keeping role
- Animal record keeping
skills (experience with ZIMS preferred but not essential)
- The ability to work alone and
as part of a team
- Good verbal and written
communication skills
- Good organisational and time
management skills
- A wide knowledge of biology,
ecology and captive requirements of animal species for which post is
responsible
- A knowledge of tropical and
rainforest flora (preferred but not essential)
- A flexible approach to
work and ability to work under pressure
- Excellent customer service
skills, answering enquiries from the public in a helpful and polite manner,
whilst working closely with keeper for the day experiences and delivering
animal encounters
- A full clean driving license
As a keeper, you will be on
a rota of 40 working hours a week, 9-6pm daily, with 2 consecutive days
off each week. The position will include working regular weekends and bank
holidays as well as sometimes working early or late to meet animal and business
needs.You will receive 5.6 weeks holiday per annum, along with additional
benefits within the company attraction.
Rate of pay dependent on
experience.
