FULL TIME POSITION WORKING 40 HOURS PER WEEK
The National Aquarium has big plans ahead and
we are expanding our Animal Department. Several new and exciting opportunities
are available for experienced Divers and Bird Keepers, working with some unique
species such as Sevengill Sharks, Little Penguins and Kiwis.
The National Aquarium of New Zealand is owned by the people of Napier
and Napier City Council. It attracts 150,000 visitors each year and offers a
wide range of experiences from diving displays and keeper talks, to getting up
close and personal with little penguins. Its centrepiece exhibit is the
stunning 1.5 million litre Oceanarium with a 50m-long viewing tunnel.
This exciting position will assist with all
tasks involving the day to day care of animals, exhibits and related operations
of The National Aquarium of New Zealand. This will also include avian
facilities at the Westshore Centre, ensuring the well-being of animals, other
staff and guests in an effective and efficient manner adhering to the
institution’s policies regarding animal welfare, Health & Safety, and other
operational matters.
We are
looking for someone who is as passionate about the Aquarium and its residents

The animal team
play a critical role in enhancing the visitor experience, as well as carrying
out high quality care of animals and exhibits.
To apply for

· NCEA Level 2
· Excellent knowledge
and understanding of basic biology
· 2 years
experience in avian husbandry and welfare (previous experience working in an
accredited zoo or aquarium is preferable)
· Ablility to
work flexible hours and days in a busy 7-day a week tourism operation
· Full Driving
Licence
As a Bird
Keeper you will be responsible for:
· Assisting in
maintaining the care, health and welfare of all specimens held at the National
Aquarium & Westshore Centre to a high level, per the institution’s Standard
Operating Procedures and Zoo Aquarium Association’s adopted policies.
· Provide daily
care and routine husbandry of penguins, kiwis & other bird species
including diet preparation & feeding, exhibit maintenance, behavioural
enrichment, monitoring and record keeping.
· Cleaning,
organisation and maintenance of all work spaces, bird enclosures, pools, life-support
equipment, quarantine, rehabilitation, incubation, food storage facilities
& preparation areas.
· Assist with
the maintenance of facilities, horticulture and pest control in & around
animal areas.
· Assist with
the administration of medical treatments, as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Assist with animal procedures, animal handling & transportation.
