Job Overview

Sealife Adventure and Wild in Southend-on-Sea is looking for a Zoological Registrar to join our team and help lead the development of the site over the next 5 years.

The successful candidate will develop and manage the collections records on site as a well as coordinate all conservation, research and volunteer programs. We are searching for a self-starting individual capable of managing complex information and supporting the animal husbandry department with the maintenance, development and reporting of animal records data for the site. The successful candidate will be responsible for the training of staff to use and enter data in animal records and for ongoing evaluation of the data entered. The position reports to the Zoo Director and will be responsible for liaising with other relevant organisations concerning associated animal records.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management of the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), the animal records system, including coordination, development, data entry, checking accuracy of current and historic entries, and the generation of reports.
  • Coordinating the volunteer program on site and facilitating student and research placements.
  • Coordinating the conservation programs on site.
  • Ensuring compliance with all Zoo legislation including Zoo Licence, Balai
  • Support the veterinary administrative assistant in managing the requests to book animals into the routine vet clinics on both sites.
  • Manage all animal transfer requirements - imports and exports - both national and international.
  • Provide administrative support for the Zoo Director
  • Work with senior managers, veterinary consultants to conduct and record all animal health related actions and breeding programs.
  • Support with all aspects with animal husbandry on site and as acting keeper/presenter when required.
  • Prepare and manage the annual animal inventory in conjunction with the requirements of the Zoo Licensing Act.
  • Provide oral and written reports as required.
  • Continue to develop and roll out ZIMS across the animal department, including the relevant training of staff. 
  • Work with colleagues in other zoos by participating in record keeping development discussions and by representing zoo at national and international meetings.
  • Be a part of the BIAZA Animal Records Group.
  • Liaise with colleagues in zoos and other relevant institutions (eg animal transport companies) regarding the transfer of livestock between zoos.
  • Maintain personal and professional development by attending training events a required.
  • The basic hours for the post are 37.5 hours a week; however flexibility is required.
  • The post holder will be required to work any additional hours (which may include occasional weekend work) necessary to satisfactorily fulfil the responsibilities of the post.

Person Specification:

  • A sound knowledge of animal records systems (or equivalent data records systems) and their application.
  • Good understanding of animal management in relation to records is desirable.
  • Ability to plan and manage own work schedule and to work with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced skills in using Microsoft Office packages and databases.
  • A zoological background would be helpful but not essential.
  • The successful candidate will be required to manage their time spent between record keeping, coordinating the volunteer/conservation programs and animal husbandry.
