Overview

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile

ZSL is seeking a Curator of Birds to lead on the strategic focus and impact of the bird species plan within ZSL’s zoos. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and planning of facilities and procedures related to bird management at the zoos and develop conservation projects for bird in situ and ex situ that complement the strategic priorities of ZSL and advance bird husbandry in the global zoo community.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining the ZSL bird species plan.
  • Develop and implement a ZSL bird species strategy with the Chief Zoological Officer.
  • Work closely with the Population Management Officer to ensure that ZSL’s responsibilities to the bird TAGs are adhered to and supported.
  • Support the Chief Zoological Officer in capital and exhibit planning.
  • In collaboration with the Animal Operations Managers, provide the highest welfare and quality of life by developing excellent protocols for the care of the species in ZSL’s Bird department.
  • Work with the ZSL LZ and WZ Chief Operation Officers to ensure that the bird species plans and exhibits at ZSL zoos provides an excellent visitor experience.
  • Develop and implement impactful conservation projects for birds in situ and ex situ that align with ZSL’s wider strategic aims and purpose, by working closely with ZSL Science and Conservation Directorates.
  • Promote bird husbandry and conservation expertise in all ZSL sites and the global zoo community.
  • Represent ZSL at national and international level, at conferences, species meetings and forums.
  • Working with the Fundraising Directorate to propose key fundraising areas with potential donors.

Person Specification

  • Track record of excellent bird care and husbandry planning and execution over many years
  • In depth knowledge of latest bird taxonomy across all classes.
  • A strong understanding of current bird husbandry, welfare and breeding techniques for zoo populations.
  • Bird population management understanding and experience
  • Exhibit development experience, internally and externally
  • Ability to engage with professional networks globally to maximise knowledge-sharing and resultant research and conservation impact
  • Excellent communication skills, with the proven ability to effectively engage a range of stakeholders, including the media, in the department’s and ZSL’s work
  • Proven ability to write detailed reports, strategic documents, policies and procedures
